Papyrus Arcana

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.

Maps, Teleportation, and Mayhem

The party is forced to make a decision. There are multiple leads to chase down – more animal victims of the FTCs showing up in the East, rumors of a disease plaguing Lost Star, tracking down the remnants of the assassins guild, and investigating a map leading to ruins in the wasteland that are said to contain magical artifacts. The group decides to pursue the map to avoid risking others reaching the the ruins first and seizing powerful magics.

Dolan obtains a copy of the map from his contact. It shows a castle about 1.5 months journey from Danaus, much farther than the group had expected. Mage Warden Alexi offers the use of an ancient and unknown Protectorate teleportation circle that will instantly transport the group into the mountains approximately 2/3rds of the way there. However, the portal only works one way. The group stocks up on provisions and enters the circle, instantly tranporting to the ruins of a temple. They are immediately attacked by two stone golem creatures, who seem very resistant to damage from the party. After a drawn out battle, the golums are eventually downed, and fall to piles of stone on the ground.

Return of the Rock-Men and Natural Disasters

Game Calendar: 3-17 to 3-24

After recovering from the fight with the golems at the teleportation circle, the group heads out. The wastes are barren with little vegetation, just scattered trees and brown grass. When casting magical spells, there appears to be a chance that a strange effect occurs (potted plant, lightning, teleportation, aging, levitation…). Small earthquakes accompany the group as the party travels in the foothills. After camping for the night, two stone golems attack the party again.

Taken unaware and unprepared, the party scrambles to recover. Dolan is attacked immediately, changes into a bear, and is immediately knocked back to human form where he casts Moonbeam. Ophelia is caught without her armor, but is able to boost the abilities of her allies with a Bless spell and Lay on Hands to heal Dolan when his knocked unconscious. Theren rages and after an ineffective swing with his sword, Julien summons a magical great sword for him to use while Julien attacks from afar with Eldritch blasts. Sumira is able to scramble to high ground on a boulder where she rains down fire from her bow. The golems are eventually dispatched, easier than before, and the party levels up.

It is possible that the golems are the same ones as before – they have similar faces, but it is uncertain. Their magic seems to shift from boulder to boulder, potentially following the party without being detected. To avoid the golems, the group makes its way to the plains to attempt to travel more freely. However, a large earthquake occurs and a chasm opens directly underneath the party. Three of the horses fall into the chasm: Simmerone, Acorn, and Wildflame. They all die instantly on impact. Julien and Ophelia also fall into the 90 foot chasm, but are assisted in escaping by rope and Julien’s Fly spell.

Game Calendar: 3-24 to 3-26

The party continues to follow the map through the wastes. At the end the day of travel, Julien spots what looks to be ruins of a town about a half-day’s travel away while using his Fly spell to scout ahead.

The party slowly makes its way towards the ruins, which appear to be sandy stones in very disparaging condition. Julien makes out a strange creature in the center of the ruins while scouting, and the party approaches cautiously.

Two creatures are in the center of the ruins, a humanoid figure with dark grey skin and charcoal eyes, and a beast two times the size of a horse, with two horns and an additional nose horn. The creatures are earth elemental in nature — possibly from the elemental plane.

The group approaches the creatures and tries to make contact. The humanoid figure casts a spell so he can speak with the group. He introduces himself as Golar of Lyzork, from Vylzok. This is revealed as a different plane of existence, whose passageway into the current plane is perhaps connected to the cataclysm.

Golar reveals a number of things of interests relating to the history of the cataclysm. Golar’s realm was left uninhabited because of attacks by the flying shadow monsters. The shadow creatures worship the ‘mountain god’ [is that right?] and have several castes: scouts, warriors, and priests. We have faced the weaker scouts, and one priest.

Golar describes the Purple Mist as a perilous area, near where his homeplane was connected. The mist causes exhaustion and magic to backfire. Golar traveled it with others from his realm, but the rest died. The mist is locked in a semi-ringed shape [??]. Golar also says that some other creatures form his plane may have traveled here: a large beaked 4-legged creature (known as beak-monsters) and smaller winged creatures that are holy to his realm.

Golar explains the boulder people are also from his homeplane. Golar has been scouting the area and described the ruined castle with a cloud vortex and strange large birds near the castle.

Golar and his steed, Thizebald, have been traveling this plane as a cartographer. Several months ago, he was attacked by bandits (redskinned [red, scaly skin] humanoids on hairy steeds [horses]). The redskins used firemagic and bows/arrows/spears and stole Golar’s possessions (A dark grey bag willed with exotic gems and rope).

Golar says that he would appreciate it if the party was able to retrieve his possessions. Dolan says that if they wish to find Golar, he can skywrite his name in the clouds, and Golar will meet them at these ruins. Golar will spend the next several weeks staying at the ruins, and then continue on. Golar taught the party three phrases in his tongue and the language of the boulder people:
- “we mean you no harm”
- “just passing through”
- “we don’t speak your language”

On the 25th day, the party travels and goes around a river to avoid it. Another encounter was made with the boulder people, but the party tried to communicate and made peace with them.

On the 26th day, the party reached the mountain with the ice cloud, the group traveled up the mountain, and Julien succumbed to the cold. After setting off a trap in front of the castle, the group entered the castle. Upon entering a frosted chamber, breathing was heard from around the corner. Therin raged and charged around the corner, only to face five 10-foot tall yeti-like creatures with wings.

Game Calendar: 3-26 to 3-27

The five winged-yeti-like creatures fly into the room and form a bit of a semicircle. A sixth one comes out and sits on a dais. It shouts in an unknown language. Julien uses the stone given bo Golar to cast a Tongues spell, and communicate. The yeti leader says he is Kler Kler, 17th son of Blur Klers, Lord of Cold Fort. They are very hostile and battle quicly ensues.

Julien starts by casting a fireball into the center of the yeti.

Battle.

The first five yeti fall fairly quickly, thanks to Julien’s fireball. Ophelia (the strongest party member in single combat) charged forwards to confront Kler Kler, her longsword held high and gleaming with the light of the Keepers. The yetis seemed to have multiple attacks – one from their eyes, as well as their vicious claws. Kler Kler made use of his attacks, first to stun Ophelia with his hateful gaze, then tearing into her with his claws. Already suffering from battle wounds, Ophelia was knocked backwards, hitting the ground heavily. The rest of the party had virtually no time to react before the life left her body, partially due to persistent cold damage from Kler Kler’s attack. Upon her death, her steed, Crystal Acorn, let out an unearthly cry, then disintegrated into a shimmering mist.

Sleep and then fight two more.

Find some scrolls and stuff.

Searching, Cerric, Centipede, and Secret Passage

The group had just finished exploring the bottom portion of a tower, briefly examining some books and taking some magical ones.

Dolan casts another detect magic spell, to aide in their searching of the remainder of the castle, but when he does so, Theren turns into a potted plant! Although this behavior in the wastes has been noted before when magic is cast, this time, the transformation does not wear off immediately, and Theren remains in potted plant form for the entire couple of days the group is searching the castle.

The group continues up the tower, with Dolan carrying Theren the Potted Plant. On the third floor of the tower, a teleportation circle is found, the design of which is sketched into Dolan’s scrapbook for future reference. On the third floor of the main castle, there is a room with a master bed/bath, and some artwork (from the Biscus period of Lora).

The group also finds some non-magical blue stones with interesting runes on them.

Continuing to search the castle, the group notices that one of the doors to the side tower on the second floor was left open. The group cautiously heads in and finds that inside a circular tower there is a prison chamber. Inside the prison is one of the redskinned raiders, and Cerric Omicurn, an elf.

Cerric explains that he has been enslaved in the wastelands since the cataclysm, and several months ago was captured by sinister creatures – the same tentacled creatures that the party encountered back East. He and his kin had been enslaved by the shadow creatures, but he was able to escape with a small group before being captured by the Yetis. Unfortunately the Yetis disposed of his companions, and most likely ate them. Cerric desperately needs to send a message to the kingdoms to the east: They must prepare for war with the flying tentacled creatures. The group agrees that this needs to be reported to the Protectoratd as soon as possible. Cerric joins the group to fulfill this task.

The group continues to search the castle extremely ineffectively, because the extreme cold is starting to affect them. An interesting book is found in the library, that explains teleportation circles and their types of magic. Also, a small gold stash is found, which is given to Cerric since he has nothing. The group is unable to find any trace of Golar’s belongings.

At one point, the group decides to approach the well from which the ice storm magic seems to be originating. Dolan attempts an unsuccessful dispel magic spell, but is then attacked by a large centipede that emerges from the snow. The group battles the centipede whose attacks chill to the bone, before retreating into the castle. The creature also retreats deeper underground after Julien attempts to attack from the terrace above.

At wits end, the group tries one last search of the castle, still not satisfied that they’ve uncovered the magic relics that brought them there to begin with. Finally, Julien discovers a secret passage through the back of the castle and into the mountainside which opens into a large room/cavern. There is a large fissure in the middle of the room and at the far end is a door blocked by a stone statue. The group crosses the small chasm, and then the statue awakens after Simera fires an arrow at it, and the group is faced with an animated stone statue.

A stone statue is slain, treasure is found...

4-1 GC (Game Calendar):
With an awakened stone statue looming before them, the group readies themselves for a fight. But first, the effect that turned Therin into a potted plant wears off, and he becomes his usual elf barbarian self again. At this time, however, Sumira changes into a potted cactus! At this point, the party starts to fight the animated stone statue. The statue casts a spell that turns brings in a gust of cold wind, that turns the floor to slippery ice. Cerric tries to back away but slips and falls 40 feet down the chasm. Dolan and Therin try to take on the statue on the same side of the chasm, while Julien casts fly and moves to the far side of the chasm, to bombard the statue with spells from afar. The party fights the statue, with Cerric casting lightning bolts from the bottom of the Chasm, Dolan casting a failed storm cloud, Therin almost succeeding in pushing the statue into the chasm, and Julien using Eldrich blast and giving Therin a magic weapon.

Eventually, the statue is felled. Therin hacks the hand off of the statue, which is used to unlock the door. The group enters the room and finds three magical items: a spear, a silver raven, and a matching pair of boots and a coat. The spear is a frost spear? that can cast a cold spell?, is a +1 magic weapon, but gives the user -1 charisma. The silver raven can send a magical message anywhere in the world and then return it. The white fur boots/coat provide the wearer with protection against cold and perhaps some other things.

Next, the group returned to the redskin that was left starving. The group failed at interrogating the redskin. Dolan finally succeeds at dispelling the portal into the cold realm where the yetis came from.

4-4 GC

The party had finished dispelling the ice portal, searching the castle, and interrogating the redscale. The group decides to let the redscale go. The group also searches the library to see if they can find any portal location close to Danaus, they decipher the locations of portals, but don’t find any that would bring them closer to Danaus.

On the night of the 3rd, the group sends a message to Denisov: “Mission accomplished, need way home, meet at portal on 4-17, urgent info, Danaus in danger – signed Julien, Sumira, Therin, Dolan.” [correct message? – sent to denisov or alexi?].

The group then heads out to travel two weeks to the portal. They notice a horse mounted figure on a neighboring mountain. The group decides to continue traveling. The figure then starts across the valley with seven other mounted redscales. A battle occurs and the redscales are dispatched.

The party returns to Danaus

After dispatching the redscale attackers, the group rides to the redscale caves, with two of the redscales fast steeds. Inside the cave, the party meets Jovan, who appears to be a treasure hunter from Danaus. He seems a bit shady, and wary of being in the presence of the protectorate, and says he would reward us for returning him unharmed to Danaus.

The party discovers a chest, which Dolan stupidly opens without much examination. A flame burst erupts and damages the party, knocking two people out. The group finds some of his belongings, and a gold knife belonging to Jovan. Some gems and stones are found, presumably belonging to Golar, and some ashes, presumably Golar’s bag, and whatever else flammable might have been in the chest.

The party travels to meet with Golar, returning his belongings to him. The group convinces Golar to return to Danaus with them, and travels to the portal. Along the way to the portal, the group encounters more of the Bouldars, and converses with them through Golar. The group tells the Bouldars that the Flying Tentacled Creatures are coming and the Bouldars should flee west, to the mountains north of the dwarven kingdom. The group teaches the Bouldars to make the dwarven rune for peace.

The party reaches the portal on 4-16, and finds a note from Alexi with a scroll of sending, that only Golar can cast. The group is transported back to Danaus, but not before Alexi orders the death of Golar’s mount, Thizebald, but to everyone’s dismay. Upon returning to Danaus, Golar and Jovan are taken away for questioning, and Kerrick is allowed to remain with the group for the time being.

Oh, btw, Sumira was a cactus the whole time.

The group sells stuff

4-17 GC

The group tries to unload much of their valued goods. The group is introduced to Steward Radamere by Lurk. The group sells several things to the prince through Steward Radamere, including the necklace, copper mugs/silverware, artwork, and statue. The 1500 coins are sold through Grimwick, and the blue gems are kept.

The group also attends the funeral of Ophelia, but some half-orcs attack the funeral, and a small battle ensues. The group kills of the half-orcs.
