The Cataclysm is a calendar-resetting magical catastrophe that marked the climax and presumed end of a bloody war between the great Loran and Denoras empires that occupied the middle of the world Csentra.
Many questions remain about The Cataclysm itself. Very little is commonly known (if known at all) about The Cataclysm’s effect on the Loran and Denoras empires, or the realm of elves known as Faana Allanar in the far west. There has been no contact with any of those peoples, and those who venture too far west — by land or by sea — never return.
The Cataclysm’s effect on the Eastern Realms is well documented. The Eastern Realms experienced a week of natural disasters and strange phenomena, including earthquakes, wind storms, abnormally coloured skies, and spectacular meteor showers at night. Popular sentiment turned against magic users, resulting in political instability and civil unrest that made the ruling class uneasy. Fearful of the devastating potential of unchecked magic usage and recognizing the need to provide some solution to the problem, several kingdoms of the Eastern Realms joined together to establish The Protectorate in the years following The Cataclysm.
